ALGARVE SURF LESSONS
Two coasts an hour apart means one of them is usually sheltered, and the schools drive you to whichever it is. These 11 lessons cover Albufeira, Lagos and the west coast beaches, priced by half day.
Meet SUPA at its wooden kiosk near Praia da Galé’s car park. After a warm-up and safety lesson, you’ll practise paddling, reaching the break, and standing on the board. Certified Portuguese and English-speaking instructors, including coaches such as Antonio, Mariana, and Matheus, work with beginners and early intermediate surfers.

Meet Albufeira Surf & Snorkeling Adventure at Praia da Falésia for a two-hour lesson shaped around your level. You’ll warm up on the sand or head into the water, using supplied boards and wetsuits while instructors such as Nuno, Shana, or John help you read waves and work toward standing up. Groups are limited to nine.

Meet Albufeira Surf & Sup at the yellow-logo shop by Galé Beach, then walk five minutes to the sand for a two-hour lesson. Coaches including Rodrigo, Alex, Ricardo, Nuno, and Francesco teach beginners in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. Wetsuit, board, insurance, and post-lesson café time are included.

Meet Surf4Fun at the pier, suit up in a neoprene wetsuit, and spend two hours learning to catch waves at Galé Beach. Certified instructors such as Rafael, Ricardo, Pedro, and Igor have helped beginners get their first stand-up. Expect a warm-up, safety advice, board practice, and direct coaching in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish.

Meet Algarve Watersport in Lagos for a two-hour beginner surf lesson led in English by certified instructors. You’ll learn wave safety, tides, currents, paddling, and board control before practicing on a beach selected for the day’s conditions. Alex, Emil, Andras, and Angelo have all taught past sessions, though instructors vary.

After a cup of coffee, we started driving around 40km to the westcoast. Arriving at the beach you just have seen one thing: WAVES WAVES WAVES. Meet Carrapateira Extreme Tours in Carrapateira Village for a 1 to 2 hour beginner surf lesson. Tiago, Guy, or another Portuguese, English, or Spanish speaking instructor teaches basic technique, then helps you catch a wave with a board, wetsuit, and insurance included. Private and small-group lessons are available.

Meet your instructor at Armação de Pêra Beach for a 1.5-hour beginner surf lesson with no more than eight students. You will cover beach and wave safety, practice basic technique, then head into the water with a soft board and warm wetsuit. English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish instruction is available.

Meet Carrapateira Extreme Tours for a 90-minute surf lesson at Bordeira Beach. You’ll receive a softboard, wetsuit, lycra, and leash, then practice with guidance suited to your level. Summer sessions use this wide, dune-backed beach, while lesson times may shift with tides and swell.

Meet Carrapateira Extreme Tours for two English-language surf sessions at Bordeira Beach, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You’ll get a softboard, leash, wetsuit, and rashguard, then work with an instructor at your level. Tides and swell may shift the schedule, and the group can include up to 15 people.

Meet a certified coach from Future Eco Surf School for a private two-hour lesson in the Algarve. Maria and Eric are among the instructors praised for patient, useful feedback. You get a board, wetsuit, insurance, and return transport by electric van from Praia da Rocha. The beach may change with sea conditions.

Meet at the yellow-logo surf shop by Galé Beach car park, where a certified English-, Portuguese-, or Spanish-speaking coach fits you with a wetsuit and board. You’ll walk five minutes to the sand, learn wave-catching and standing techniques, then practice with feedback in a group capped at six. A drink at Zimzala Surf Cafe is included.
